I am getting the same thing when I run disk clean. I
have yet to determine the cause. Gateway told me to
reinstall XP to fix it. There's got to be a rational fix
for this...

Check Task Manager and see which process is the hog. I
recently found a Trojan Horse (Backdoor.Sdbot) that
created multiple processes called 'SCVHOST.EXE' not to be
confused with the legitimate process called SVCHOST.EXE.

I'm having a similar problem...an svchost.exe file that
is neccessary for at least 10 different programs keeps
using 90-99% CPU. I found that after startup,if I connect
to the internet using Internet Explorer,it winds down and
System Idle Process goes up and svchost.exe declines to
zero eventually. I have a post about this and hope to
get a permenant fix.

I had this problem once, and it went away when I used the registry fix for
undeleteable video files...it was caused by windows trying to make the thumbnail
on a corrupted video file.
