You need to check the manual for your motherboard to see what settings you
*can* change but, more importantly, to see that your BIOS will support the
CPU. The BIOS needs to support the speeds, multiplier, and voltages of the
CPU. If you place a CPU in a system without verifying compatibility, you
could "burn" the CPU (irreparable damage).

i checked online to see if it could hold 3.2 ghz and i just stepped up from
3 ghz. i'm pretty sure it can hold it bc companies were offering packages
with my motherboard and a p4 3.2 processor. have a abit ic7 max 3 motherboard

If that's necessary, yes...BIOS updates can be risky and should be performed
only if the update will resolve a specific problem you are having.

First, try resetting the BIOS on the board to see if it will autodetect your
CPU.

What motherboard do you have?

Your BIOS is up to 18, but I would never attempt to
flash a BIOS without a UPS battery back up. Just
go into the BIOS. Load the optimal defaults. Then
in periphials disable anything that you are not using.
(serial ports, game ports etc) Reboot. You may also
have to reload the latest chipset drivers. 875P Drivers
can be found on intels support page.

Symptom(s):
Error: "CPU is unworkable or has changed" received during boot up of a
Pentium® 4 processor running at 1.60 GHz or faster.

Cause:
Some motherboards that support Pentium® 4 processors were designed when the
Pentium® 4 processor was first released at 1.40 and 1.50 GHz. Since then,
faster Pentium 4 processors have been introduced.

Solution:
The BIOS must be updated to a newer revision so that it can recognize the
faster processor. Contact the system or motherboard manufacturer to get the
newest BIOS update (1.0103/22/2001 or later). If an Intel® Desktop Board is
being used, see the Support website for motherboard identification and BIOS
update information.

this is odd bc i ran a 3 ghz processor fine.. i just moved up .2 and it's
doing this. do you think a bios update it necessary. If it's that risky i
don't know if i want to try it

Again, if the tech support for *your* specific m/b says you need to
update the BIOS in order to run your new processor, then that's what
you have to do. It isn't a big deal - just make sure to back up the old
BIOS first. Your m/b mftr. will have the correct utilities on their
website.
