CPU Spiking every 9 Seconds

Having a Problem with CPU spiking from around 10% to 100% every 9 seconds &
dropping back down after 1 second.

Have found that the two applications that are taking the all the processor
speed are “System†& “explorer.exeâ€.

Have ended the process on “explorer.exe†and have found that the CPU flat
lines to about 6% with no more spiking, obviously need this essential
programme to run well pretty much anything.

This CPU munching is causing major problems with running media, such as
games and Video files.

PC Spec: -
XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 All updates.
Norton Anti-Virus 2006 fully up-to-date & no viruses detected ,
Using Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta.
NVIDIA Geforce FX550 128mb
CPU 1700Ghz Pentium 4
512 SDRAM &
All drivers are up to date.

Any ideas on solving this problem would be appreciated.

Thanx in advance.

Task Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that
little bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the
image name producing the high CPU usage, right click,
select Properties, Services. Note there are the full names and some
explanation of what each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services are
dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies tab allow
it a little time to display the information.

Gerry, I was curious to know if you could help me with my issue or if you
heard about it. The post is about the "Crakling Noise" from user "Moe"

Gerry, please check my post

No error Message
CPU utilization split between "explore.exe" and "winlogon.exe" and a couple
of percent here and there on others...

Thanx Gerry found process explorer to be a very usefull tool in detecting CPU
spikes.

The spike was in the process "exprorer.exe" with the tool I found that a
file "stobject.dll" was taking the CPU usage, on killing the thread the usage
leveled out .

What dose this file do ? why would it be munching CPU usage and is it
detramental to the running of XP if it is removed ?

Thanx again

Well, Is't sort of nice to know I am not the only one. I have the exact same
problem, except it takes several minutes to get my cpu back unless I end
explorer. (Slow system. I will upgrade eventually. Then I can crash even
faster!)

I decided the system was unfixable and wiped it clean. Performed a new
install, reloaded my files and a few of my programs, and the problem came
right back. I think it is spyware, but I haven't pinned it down yet. Until
then, I will just have to wait my turn to use my PC.

Some variants of the MyDoom worm hijack stobject.dll. Other malware may use
this method as well. You should scan your computer with several different
anti-spyware and online anti-virus scanners to be sure you haven't caught
something.
