cpu spiking and driving me mad!

What can I do? About every 5 seconds the system freezes for about a couple
seconds and it's driving me nuts!!!! Can someone please tell me how I can
find out what process is doing this? I have watched the task manager and the
processes but it's not leading me onto what process is doing it! How can I
remedy this problem, or download the appropriate program to solve it?

In the process view of Task Manager click twice on the CPU column
header to sort the processes into descending sequence by CPU usage.
The list sequence will change automatically as items increase or
decrease their CPU usage.

That should help you to identify the culprit.

This type of behavior is often an indication of a malware infestation
of some kind so in addition to your regular antivirus and antispyware
apps it is often beneficial to get a periodic "second opinion" from at
least one of the free online scanner sites such as:
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Good luck
