CPU Speed Problem

I have a homebuilt system with an ASUS NVIDIA chip set and an AMD 3200
processor (not 64). Sometimes it boots up as a 1,000 processor and sometimes
it boots as a 3200 processor. The CMOS is set properly for 3200. What should
I look for?

Richard.

What motherboard? What processor? Are you sure you aren't reading the
HT speed?

I think he said it's not an A64, it's a K7. Does the K7 have power speed
control like the K8? If it does then that's you explanation.

MB: ASUS A7N8X2.0

Processor: Athlon 3200 X86 Family 6 Model 10 Stepping 0

In System sometimes it boots and shows 3.20 gH and too often it boots and
shows 1.10 gH.

Hope that helps.

Could be the bios is not getting good power when the computer is turned off.
So the bios battery might need replacing.

It should show it in MHz, not GHz. Default for the 3200+ is 11x200 for
2200MHz. Don't know where the hell you're getting 3.20GH. And WHAT is
actually showing this? Bios? Some win program? What?

boot a Linux live CD and open a console and type cat /proc/cpuinfo on the
command line and see what it says. Exp:

[wes@wes2 ~]$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 15
model : 4
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+
stepping : 8
cpu MHz : 800.077
cache size : 512 KB
