Could not find a web server at.....

SKB

I am running FP 2003 on Windows XP Sp2. I have IIS5 up
and running and can bring up the web site. When I start
FP2003 it display the message "Could not find a web
server at....."

I then start IIS5 and need to stop and start the default
web server. At this point FP2003 will be able to find the
web server. But, if I close and bring up FP2003 I get the
same problem.

Any suggestions?

IIS and World Wide Web Publishing Service must be started *before* you open
the web using http method.

IIS and Web Publish is already up and running.

The default Web is already started.

I can get to my web site via the browser (Its on the
local machine)

I bring up FP2003.

It tells me it cannot find the web server

I switch over to IIS5. I stop the default web site

I restart the default web site

I switch over to FP2003 and now it can the web server

If I close FP2003 the problem starts all over again

Do you have FrontPage set to open the last web site you worked on? Try
turning off that options and see what happens (it's under Tools | Options |
General).

Thanks all for the feedback.

When I open FP2003 I have a remote web site as my
default. I get the error when trying to open an existing
site that is on my local machine. I removed/reinstalled
the Extentions and reinstalled FP2003. Now I cannot even
connect to the local machine via http in FP2003

But, I have a work-around. I can access the files
throught the local drive (C:\Inetpub\wwwroot....) using
FP2003.

Thanks again!

You workaround bypasses the extensions, so you are accessing the web as disk-based, not
server-based, any you will run into problems at some point.

When you open your local site via http, how are you doing this?

I am using my local machine as the web server which is
running XP Pro. When I open FP2003 I click on Open
Site... option under File

I type in http://computername/website and press the enter
key

This is where the pop up message start to occur.

FYI.....

It seems that the problem resided in Microsoft FireWall.
I deleteted FrontPage from the exception list and added
it back in. That seemed to allow me to "access" my local
machine via http://

Thanks for all your help.

Try opening:

http://computername

or

http://127.0.0.1

first, then double click the subweb to open.
