Cost of software

Squik27

Hi,

I'm just wondering how much it would cost to develop a customized program
using MS Access for a company.

It basically need to keep track of about 400 to 1000 students. It needs to
implement courses, payment, inventory, users, and related tasks to those
mention such new enrollments, inventory moves and so on.

Thank you

Much, much more than it would cost to buy a COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf)
program that would meet your needs. Check out trade magazines for your field.

My WAG would be $100,000 minimum.

We have developed similar projects anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000

But there are OTS products much cheaper.

I would be more than willing to discuss the project.
Going with a custom solution always has pros and cons over "off the shelf".

For whom?

Given what requirements?

?Any experience with relational database design?

?Any experience with MS Access?

?Any experience with graphical user interface design?

?Any experience with application development?

Assuming what level of user-proofing?

Single-user or multi-user/network installation?

Are you looking for a firm bid? (in which case, any experienced developer
will have to pad the estimate because of all the "oh by the ways" that will
end up cropping up)

Are you looking for an hourly rate? (again, how will you compare 1 hour of
an experienced developer's time against 5 hours of a novice's time?)
....

(<g> did you want fries with that?!)

Squik27,

Hmmm, let me see... Just to start with...

Access version?

Windows version?

Do you have a Data Model? (This is kind of a biggy! No data model mean
more, oops I forgot I needed that, will have to pad hours for that.)

Network?

SQL Server?

How many Users?

Security?

Reports? Merge with Word? PDF?

Where is the information now? (Data Conversion services may apply here)

Okay, I think you get the idea. More information needed to even begin to
guestimate! Perhaps you could provide more information?

I describe this in my newsletter article "Why Fixed Bid Software
Projects Are a Bad Idea" at www.JStreetTech.com/newsletters. In our
shop, we only work on an estimated hourly basis.
Are you looking for an hourly rate? (again, how will you compare 1 hour of

Not just the time difference, which can be significant - I've
definitely seen more than a 10-1 ratio! But also, the novice's system
won't be as robust, flexible, maintainable, extendable, consistent,
etc. No offense to novices intended, we all start there! But you
just can't compare hourly rates - you also have to consider
experience, testimonials, project history, likelihood of success, etc.
