corrupted system file

I've been given a computer that will not load Windows due to the following;
"Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

I have tried to use the solution explained in the KB article 307545 but
cannot log into the Recovery console. I assume that this is due the the OS
being an OEM version. When I try I get the massage "no hard drives can be
found". I am using a WXPPro CD to try and affect the repair.

Any suggestions on how I can resolve this.]

Same qestion as Mike Hyndman but mine is a sata disk.. I plug the drive into
another computer and i can get all my file back up. This mean that my
harddisk is working. So anyone can help me on repairing it to boot up after
putting it back to it's original cpu?

And currently i got a new problem, after back up, i go replace the system
files with a new one which i found in "restore" folder, now i cannot even
access anything using the original cpu. I still can access when i slave it
again. My lcd screen show "No Signal" but there is power running in the
background, i can hear fans and hard disk spinning but there is no sign of
activites on the screen. So may i know what is the main cause and how can i
repair it?

Thanks a million

Hi Javen,

Click start then run, in the run box type "CMD" without the quotes in the
black DOS windows type "SFC /scannow" without the quotes and this will scan
and replace your system files, make sure you have your XP disc as it may be
required.

Kind Regards

When you used the Restore version of the SYSTEM file, did you back up the
original before you overwrote it?

Depending on what date was on that restore version of the SYSTEM file, you
may not have a SYSTEM file reflecting your system. In that registry file,
SYSTEM, is all references to hardware, settings, services, ...

If you had modified anything on your system after that version was created,
those modifications are not reflected.

When you said you tried to use the Recovery Console using the Windows XP CD,
does the CD actually have Microsoft Window XP Installation disc (or
something like that) as a label.

Or is this a CD supplied by your PC manufacturer, that has a modified
Windows CD installation and there own version of the Recovery Console.

When booting from the Windows XP CD (after ensuring that the CD is checked
for booting first in BIOS):
you should only see Windows requesting 'R' for recovery console and 'ESC' to
exit.

Do you see this?
