Corrupted database

Have a db that is now in Acc 2003 but started life as an Acc 97 file.
Without warning today it refused to open, giving the message "The database is
in an unexpected state". Read KB 888634 and tried their suggestions but
could not rescue the file. Downloaded Jet 4.0 SP8 but could not rescue the
file.
Can anything be done?
Thanks in advance.

Just having gone through what I thought was an Access corruption, it was
actually my harddrive that had problems. Did you try the open the file on a
different computer?
