Corrupted Admin and newly created accounts

Hi,
my Administrator account has become corrupted, and now each new account I
create is also corrupted. I am wondering if there is a specific key in the
registry whose settings I can change to repair this. I have, for example, a
particular image for the Admin account to use, and it is using the default
chess piece image. I also can't access the user accounts area while that
profile is loaded. I've tried replacing the ntuser.dat file as per Kelly's
XP tools and that did not fix the problem.

When computers get that out of hand, we usually just format them..
they end up being more trouble than they are worth... you COULD spend
hours looking for a good fix, or just fix it in a couple of hours....
your call..

Hi,
I actually have a huge number of installed apps, so reformatting would
involve several days of reinstalling, that's why I'd prefer to fix what is
broken in the registry, if possible.

Logon to the Built-in Administrator account and create a new
Administrator account.

When/IF you get it all fixed, consider buying a backup/cloning program
such as Acronis True Image and do frequent backups.

I do nightly backups to an external drive and a weekly cloning to a
second internal drive.

In addition to the nightly backups, I have a small program that
frequently synchronizes all of my data files between my "C" drive and
the clone.

If I have a problem that System Restore won't fix, I have a backup
that is rarely more than a few hours old to rely on.

Haven't had to do a repair install or a new installation for years.

Dear John,
I can't get into the user accounts area in safe mode, that's what tipped me
off to the fact my administrator account was corrupted. I get an internet
explorer script error.

My original user account seems fine, and I can create computer administrator
accounts using it, but those accounts are also corrupted.

How can I fix this?

Dear Uncle Grumpy,
I do use a "go back" program called Rollback RX Pro which is outstanding.
The problem is that I have no idea when the account became corrupted, and in
installing their latest release, I had to uninstall their old release which
had my older snap shots. It also has a back up image function, which I
haven't yet used (new release). I keep my data backed up to an external
drive.

Hi Sue,
Make sure your machine is clean from Viruses and Malwares by scanning.
Error message when you try to open the User Accounts item in Control Panel
on a Windows XP-based computer: "Microsoft HTML Application host has
encountered a problem and needs to close"

Open a run command adn type in:
regsvr32 nusrmgr.cpl Click [OK] and then Reboot your machine

Read this link:

Open a run command and type in:
control userpasswords2 click [OK]
There try to Reassign the credentials/privileges again to who ever on this
machine by highlighting it then click Properties Button.

Open the Run Command and see the permissions on these keys:

[-] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / System\ "administrators" Allow full Control
HKEY_CURRENT_USER / "administrators" Allow full Control
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / "administrators" Allow full Control
%SystemDrive% / "administrators" Allow full Control
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /Software\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer "administrators"
Allow full Control

Or Open the run command and see the Group Policy:
gpedit.msc click [OK]
Locate the Control Panel and see the Permissions there.
Back Up best before things get nasty and you lose your valuable Data.
Look in the Event Viewer for any error message, that belong to NET Passport
or any other application and send the error or copy it in your next message.

In that case it sounds like the Default User profile has been corrupted.
You can replace it with a known good profile.
