Corrupt Master File Table

D

I've got a problem accessing the D; Drive. The error message is Corrupt
Master File Table. I used my Seagate / Maxtor Disk Drive utility CD's and
physically the drive is ok.

From what I've searched on so far, it appears I might be able to fix it
using a recover console from either XP or Vista. I mention Vista because I
do have Beta 1 installed on the D: Drive with dual boot capabilities with XP
on the C: Drive.

Can anyone give any guideance? Am I going in the right direction with this
problem? I've not used these Recovery Console tools before. If push comes
to shove I should be able to us my OnTrack tools to recover the data, but I
don't think that's the right option right now.

Thanks,
David...

There is no recovery console in Vista. The standard solution for this is to
run chkdsk on it. Make sure you have a full and complete backup first.

Rock, tou are correct, but I believe the equivalent is called MRE, Microsoft
recovery
Environment which I discovered that last night at
http://blogs.msdn.com/winre/default.aspx as
I was "Googleing"....

How do I do a full and complete backup on a drive that I can't access?
That's part of my whole problem :)

Here are some options:

1. Take the drive out of the computer and install it as a slave drive in
another Windows XP or 2000 computer. It should read the drive ok, so you can
copy the data.

2. Create a bootable Bart's PE disk, boot from that, then copy the data to
external USB drive or flash drive.

3. Download a bootable Linux distro called Knoppix. Create a bootable CD
from that, boot from it, and copy the data to USB drive or flash drive, or
if the computer has two CD drives, one of which is a burner, then use the
k3b burning program on the Knoppix CD to burn the data to CD.

4. Take it to a competent computer tech to backup the data.
