Corrupt Local Users and Groups??? Please Help

This is my second posting on this....When I try to access the Local Users
and Groups in the
MMC there is a red X over the option. When I click on it
I get a message:

Can not access computer xxxxx. The
error was: Invalid Syntax.

I have tried to change services to use a specific account
and typing in a vlid user name always fails. I hope this doesn't mean what
I think it does.....Please advise.

I get this same symptom with Windows 2000.
I can install some new programs successfully.
I have been unable to uninstall some programs
There seems to be problem with the registry permissions in the
HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\software directory.

I am trying to figure this out too, so any help is appreciated
