Corrupt free space

In "My computer" the system disk shows that there is 20GB free space, when
the actual free space is more than 270 GB. Is there anything I can do to
correct this? I have defragmented and run a full chkdsk check, which didn´t
help.

How big is your drive? Exactly where do you see both of the above
numbers?

In "My computer" concerning C: I read free space about 18 GB. I Windows
defragmenter I get a report saying that free space is about 278 GB (which is
certainly correct!). From different partitioning programs I also get 278 GB.
The disk is originally 320 GB. I have xp pro sp3 with all recent updates.

There are utilities, for listing the contents of the disk and its partitions.
I like this one, but there are others. This one uses a graphic display, to
help you locate very large files. Hold your mouse over a large block,
to get the file name.

Try Control Panel -- Administrative Tools -- Computer Management. You
should see status, capacity, and free space for all your drives.

checksum program. It if called "fciv.exe"

This will give exactly the same info as in "My computer". Btw the free space
has now gone down to about 7 GB in spite of the fact that I haven´t done
anything particular...

You've done the right things initially; chkdsk etc.. But how do you know
that that "actualy free space is 270 Gig"?
Is that 20 Gig getting smaller? Is so, then it's very likely you have
picked up malware and it's going to run you out of diskspace.

Run updated AV and at least 3 spyware checkers ASAP if the 20 Gig is getting
smaller. They should find it; it's a fairly common one.
Watch other drives for the same thing to start happening, if you have more
drive letters.

What does windows Explorer show in its status bar for free space? My
Computer? How many drives do you have? Is this the boot drive? If the 20 Gig
IS changing, it would be wise to try working from Safe mode and stop using
the computer for anything but troubleshooting this problem until you get it
resolved.
Feel free to come back with more questions; use another computer for that
if you can.

Another possibility is that you have your C-Drive partitioned to not use the
full disk.
What does the Disk Manager show?

Thanks for the tip about Sequoia - interesting tool!

I have solved this problem now: I have a program Rollback, that takes
virtual "snapshots" which take up space but the virtuality of the snapshots
will confuse some programs like Paragon Backup & Recovery etc. The solution
was simple: I had to delete some old snaphots to recover free space...
