Copying video from computer to dvd-r

Hope someone can help me. I have recorded video from camcorder onto computer and am trying to copy onto DVD disc. I copied successfully on normal cd-rw, but this did not play on my dvd recorder with television. I have bought DVD-R discs but when I put into CD-R drive, it does not recognise there is any disc in there. Am I being really silly? Have I bought the wrong discs or is it not possible. What am I doing wrong? Thank you

Your CD burner will NOT burn to DVD-R discs, but you CAN burn a movie file
to CD-R discs which will play in many newer DVD players. You need to create
a VCD or an SVCD with your burning software: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/vcd

Thank you for answering my question. Bit confused though. Should the copy I made on the CD-RW work on my living room DVD machine? Not sure about the other bit. Did look at web site you suggested but am very new to all this. Sorry

You have to have a DVD burner.
You just can't burn to DVD and expect it to work.

In short, capture video from camera
Convert captured video to DVD mpg2
Run DVD authoring software to convert your mpg2 to the file structure
required by the DVD burner.
Load you burning software and burn the file structure made by the authoring
software.

This takes very long time hours depending on machine speed and captured
video file size and capture rate.

It's okay- we're all new to something. So you've burned the movie file on
to a CD-RW but it won't play on your home DVD player. What format did you
use to burn the movie to disc? If you burned a DATA disc, the movie file is
indeed on that CD-RW, but your home unit may not recognize it. That disc
will play fine on your computer, but the living room unit won't be able to
make any sense of it.

In what format is the original movie file as it sits there on your hard
drive?
