copying photos and files

HELP PLEASE Trying to copy to CD. I get a message "Problem Copying"
"Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy the file. What do you
want windows to do?" I hit the retry button and the same message occurs. I
am putting in brand new cd's. I never get to step five and never get to "you
have files waiting". I'm stuck. What am I missing?

Check that this CD drive is enabled for XP. From your post you obviously
have used XP before to copy photos to CD but now you can't. Probably due to
the fact that you have used some other software to copy files, music, etc.
to CD and this software took over.
Right click on your CD drive under My Computer. Click on Properties and
click on the Recording tab and then "Enable..." See if you can then copy
photos to CD using XP.

Yes, this usually works. However, if you close the computer and reboot, the
third party software may take over again automatically. So just be aware of
this and go to Enable again to use XP.
Annoying but not a big deal.
