Copying a DVD

Trevor L.

I tried to copy a DVD in DVD-R format with a one hour movie on it.

First, I copied it to hard disk, using Windows Explorer.

This created 2 folders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. The latter had .vob files in it, as expected.

I then used DVD MovieFactory3.5 and Selected Copy/Fit to Disc. I tried DVD+R and DVD-R.

The resulting disk would not play on a DVD player, although it is fine on the PC in Ulead DVD Player. Basically, I have 2 coasters. I guess they are oK as backup, except that I don't need them - I have 4 copies now

I doubt that the disk had copy protection, as the files created on hard disk are quite large.

What do I do to get it to play in a standard DVD player.

I am sure I did this before, using the same process.

Do you have any other third party DVD burning software... I'm not familiar
with MovieFactory. In Roxio or Nero you would simply point the application
to the Video_TS folder and tell them you want to make a copy of the DVD
which resides on your hard drive.

With PowerDirector or WinDVD, you would have to import each VOB file
individually and then create the DVD.

I have Paragon Easy CD-DVD Recorder, which gives me the option of creating a
data disc.
Is this the same as a DVD?

I am confused by the way that I created a DVD that plays on the PC but not
on the DVD player, when I thought I was creating an exact copy - bit for
bit. Clearly I wasn't.

I suppose I can try on an erasable DVD (DVD+RW is all I have on hand at the
moment) and see if this plays.

If it does, I suppose a DVD+R or DVD-R will also

The only Nero software I have is for creating CDs. The prgorams I can find
are inCD.exe and nero.exe
I am not sure what each does, but there is no option for burning DVDs.

No a data DVD is just one that contains files... as if you were
putting them onto a disk for archival purposes. It does not create
the VOB, BUP or IFO files which 'make it' a video DVD.

Try finding DVDShrink - it should do what you want without a problem.

I am still confused.

This is software to shrink DVDs. At this stage I don't need to do that. It
will fit on a 4.7 GB DVD.

And I have to pay for a membership and also have DVD burning software. Since
the DVD burning sofware I have wouldn't create a DVD that plays OK, then I
don't see how I won't still have the same problem if I were to use DVDShrink

All I need to know is how to copy from DVD to DVD (via hard disk) in such a
way that the output DVD plays on a standard DVD player.

I have copied it, but it only plays on a PC. The fact that it copies means
there is no copy restriction.

It all comes back to:
How do I copy the DVD exactly, so that it is the same as the orginal and
plays in a DVD player.
As a corollary, what went wrong that gave me a DVD that plays on the PC, but
not on a DVD player ?

Every man and his dog must want to copy DVDs to distribute their precious
home movies to family and friends.

Why is it so difficult with a DVD which is clearly *not* copy protected ???

It's not difficult if you have the right software. In my case I have
Roxio Easy Media Creator which works as follows: open the program and
select "copy". A screen with several choices appears, one of which is
"copy dvd movies". Selelcting that opens roxio disk copier with the
choice CD & DVD copy highlighted. You are instructed to place your
source dvd into your drive and the files are (temporarily)copied onto
your hd. You then are prompted to remove the source dvd and insert a
blank one and your files are burned to it. Take it out and play it on a
player or a PC. Has worked every time.

DVD Shrink is free. If it does not have to shrink the file, it will not do
so.

As I previously indicated, if you had different third party software (like a
full version of Nero or v7 or v8 or Roxio, you wouldn't need any other
software, but you appear to have a OEM version of Nero which does not
include the features you need.

OK, you (and they) say it is free, but in order to get to the download
screen, you have to subscribe to a membership - not free.

The version of Nero I have came with my CD drive, so it doesn't include DVD
options - they are there but greyed out.

Is there any out there who knows how to use the Ulead software to copy DVD
to DVD. It purports to do all things, but so far I have only partly got it
to work.

It still mystifies me - the DVD copies and plays on the PC, but not on the
DVD player.

I have posted a similar query to this on the Ulead forum, but replies to
date haven't helped me to do what I want.

Can anyone suggest other forums/newgroups ?
