How to backup and restore Outlook

http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

There is out-dated information on some of these pages, specifically with
regard to Outlook 2003 and 2007.

The main points to note:
1. Do NOT use the import/export function to move Outlook data from one
version to another - all you need to do is to copy the pst file, with
Outlook closed.

2. Do NOT paste the copied pst file into the default location - paste into
(for example) your Documents folder and then do File-Open-Outlook Data File
within Outlook.

2. can you view contacts on the disc before retrieving off of disc?

No.

What's oab and obi?

Ost are Exchange files and AFAIK if you just re-connect to your Exchange
account you'll get all the emails, contacts and calendar etc
automatically...

The OAB and OST files are the offline address book (the local copy of your
GAL) and the local cache of your Exchange mailbox. You need to copy neither.
They'll be recreated on the other PC s you use Exchange there. I believe the
OBI file is temporary as well.

Thanks for the info on OAB.....

I did this and it worked GREAT, except I now have 2 sets of Personal Folders
in my file list. One set has all the copied information, the other is empty.
Can these empty ones simply be deleted? How?

You probably need to set the one with data as the default delivery location,
then just right-click on the empty Personal Folders and choose "close"
