Coolscan V ED & Dual Scan III & Slow USB

Hi-

I'm thinking about getting a film scanner. Except I'm using a 1 GHz
iMac, and am limited to the slow version of USB, or Firewire.

Can anyone tell me what the scan times are with the slow USB with
Minolta's Dual Scan III, and the Nikon Coolscan V ED?

Any suggestions for a firewire scanner in the sub $1000 price range?

You don't hav e to be limited to 'slow USB' Check the computer catalogues
for upgrade cards such as Adaptec's Duo Connect AUA-3020 combo Firewire and
USB 2.0 card.

'Fraid I do- the iMac has no slots- it's major weakness. It does have
firewire, but firewire scanners are a bit more expensive. I want to know
how much speed I'm giving up with USB.

Nikon Coolscan V about 4 minutes (for scan only, no processing or save) at
4000dpi setting using Vuescan on a 700MHz eMac. This is pretty much in line
with the large amount of data that needs to be sent. Scan only uses about
10% of processor so USB is the limitation. Then takes about another 2
minutes to do light cleaning and save. Minolta Dual Scan III takes about
half the time at full resolution of 2820, as half as much data.

I recommend the Coolscan V. Seems to produce more consistent scans than the
Minolta Dual Scans and has infrared channel to do slide cleaning through ICE
or Vuescan IR clean.

"PrimeFilm 3650 Pro3" It is a 3600dpi scanner with Digital Ice3, with a
firewire interface. About $200 cheaper than the Coolscan V. What is
Pacific Image's reputation? Firewire answers the speed problem, but will
I be giving up much in scan quality, compared to the Coolscan V?

Pacific Image scanners get reviews ranging from good value at the price
to poor value at any price. Have a look at Amazon.com. I would be
surprised if the resolution of the optic system is good enough to
justify a 3600 dpi CCD. The recent scanner comparison (URL anyone ?) may
have included a prime scanner.
