Cookies in IE6

D

Dave

I must be doing something wrong. I've got a site that requires
cookies, so I'm trying to add a quick check that makes sure a user has
cookies turned on. Seemed pretty simple, just set a cookie and if I
can read it back, all's good. However, when I test in IE 6, the page
always claims cookies are on, even if I've got them turned off.

I've turned off cookies by going through Tools -> Internet Options ->
Privacy and moving the slider to "Block all cookies" and also by using
the Advanced Privacy Settings to block first and third party cookies.

When I set session cookies (no expiration date set), the page claims
to find it. When I set cookies that expire in 5 minutes, nothing is
added to the Cookies folder in Windows Explorer, but the page still
claims to find it.

I've tried the page through my company's intranet and also over the
internet and gotten the same results. Am I turning off cookies wrong?
Have I run into a known bug? Any assistance would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

PA Bear,
Personally I think I would suggest checking the settings if a poster
was using a 3rd party Firewall (or at least ask) .....

the page always claims cookies are on, even if I've got them turned off.

Did you delete any old Cookies for that site?
That way you would ensure that there was nothing to present
with your request, regardless of whether Cookies are blocked.

It's pretty clear that blocking Cookies prevents the saving of new Cookies
and the Help (F1, Change your Privacy Settings) claims that blocking
prevents existing Cookies from being read but avoiding having an existing
Cookie would ensure that, without relying on whether it really works the way
it is documented.

BTW I agree with Mike, if you need help understanding what is happening
for a specific example, post a link.
