Converting (very old) powerpoint presentations into modern version?

I have a presentation that was created on a Mac sometime in the late 80's.

Neither Mac X Powerpoint nor Windows XP Powerpoint will open the file,
though I was able to open it as text in Mac X Word (with lots of bad data).

I don't know when it was made, exactly, or even whether it was Powerpoint or
whatever the predecessor was.

Is there anyway to reclaim the presentation?

Thanks?

Most probably not, but you might want to start by checking the file's type and
creator, which might give you a clue as to what app created it. The good folk
over in our companion Public.Mac.Office.Powerpoint newsgroup can probably tell
you how to do that.
