converting ME to Xp and wps to doc

okay...so after a couple of years of dealing with ME we finally did a
clean install of XP with hours of help from a friend. Before ditching
ME I backed up everything not realizing one key ingredient.
Apparently MS Works saves files as .wps and MS Word (which we now
have) saves files as .doc and the kicker is I can't get our new MS
Word to convert all of our files overor even read the discs. How is
this possible? Someone tell me this is not a bad joke! How the heck do
I open all these files that I saved on floppies?
Help, please...:)

In the install of Office (and hence Word) there is a section of Text
Converters, which includes ones for Works 4.0 for Windows and Works 2000
files, You then select the type in the bottom pane when you Open in
Word

There is also a WORKS converter plug-in to download from MS
downloads.
