I am a small business owner with a fairly advanced knowledge of MS Office
products, but I am a relative novice when it comes to web design and
publishing. I purchased FrontPage 2003 about 3 weeks ago and have found it
relatively easy to use because of its similarity to other MS Office products.
My small business web site has been hosted by Yahoo Small Business for the
past 3 years or so. I designed the site using the Yahoo SiteBuilder web site
building tools they provided. I recently wanted to update the site to a more
advanced format using frames and a common interface for all pages so that
future re-designs and changes would be easier. I created a new FrontPage
site by doing the following:
1. Imported the original SiteBuilder site files into FrontPage;
2. Set up frames for the header, contents, body (main), and footer using
elements from the old SiteBuilder site such as background images, pictures
and menu bars;
3. Made copies of all original content pages;
4. Deleted all content from the original content pages except for the
background, page titles and keywords;
5. Rebuilt each content page by first copying a uniform layout template
(text or form boxes) to the page, then cutting and pasting the original text
and form fields into the page;
6. Corrected all form field names and content to conform to FrontPage rules;
7. Viewed reports to make sure that there were no site errors except for
those associated with the site needing to be published to work correctly.
I then prepared my internet space on the Yahoo small business server by
using LeechFTP to delete all files and directories on the Yahoo web hosing
server (except for the access log files).
Then, following directions from a Yahoo technician, I activated FrontPage
for my Yahoo-hosted web site.
I then published my new FrontPage web site to the Yahoo web server using
FrontPage.
Next, I viewed my web site online and found that it was not displaying
correctly. The frames seemed to be in place, but all the content for the
frames and main page was missing (A lot of “Not Found†errors were displayed
on the screen).
Next, I ran the “Recalc All†for FrontPage on the Yahoo web hosting control
panel. This process seemed to run for several hours, but never finished.
I called Yahoo technical support and was told that the problem was that
pages created in SiteBuilder could not be imported into FrontPage and,
therefore, my web pages were incompatible with FrontPage. I am skeptical of
this answer due to the fact that FrontPage did not list any page errors and
was able to display the pages correctly in previews on my computer.
Any suggestions on how to get my FrontPage web site to display correctly on
the Yahoo web server? Are there really incompatibilities between
SiteBuilder-created pages and FrontPage-created pages such as .htm vs. .html,
etc?
