Is there a way to convert a Publisher document into Word, or is Publisher
similar to creating a PDF?

Publisher will make a file for you to print with your printer. Or, people
with Publisher will be able to open, look and edit your publisher file. If
you want to create a file for most anyone can open the most popular way to
accomplish this is to create a pdf file using Adobe (very expensive) or some
other pdf creating program. There are some free, shareware and commercial
alternative programs. After comparing a half a dozen programs (free,
shareware and commercial) my choice was PDF-XChange. It is offered by
Tracker Software in two versions, "Lite" and "Professional". If interested
you may want to visit them at:

Unfortunately our problem is that the client has a file done in Publisher
and no way to read it or convert it to anything else since no one in the
organization any longer has Publisher. It appears the only way we can get
at the contents is by purchasing Publisher.

Do you know if there is a Viewer available?

No viewer for publisher. You are welcome to send me the publisher file if
it is version 2000 or older and I'll convert it to a pdf file and return it.

These file formats are not compatible. You need Publisher to edit a
Publisher file.

If you take up Don's offer to convert to a PDF file, you will still have the
same problem of editing a PDF file which is equally incompatible with Word,
and while Acrobat can saved the PDF file produced from Publisher as a Word
document that document comprises only an image of the original.
