I am one among the many still using windows XP. Facing its impending doom in April of 2014, an upgrade to a whole new OS is a leap I think would be in my best interest:confused:.

I would like to get some input on going from XP to win 8 and are recommendations to get a new machine and downgrade to win 7, noting that win 7 is going to be facing the same doom in 2020.

For those win 8 users, how bad is the news I have heard about win 8 not working well with keyboard & mouse? Do you suspect any changes to this in the coming of version 8.1?

Also, I would like to get an idea of how much RAM memory it takes just to load Win 8?

……….and anything else you feel may be helpful in my journey of digital conversion.

Many thanks for your input:bow:!

Have a great day & don’t forget to smile,

I deleted your duplicate posts, and one here from Feckit that pointed to a now deleted post.

As for your dilemma, I can't help you.

I use Win7, when that runs out, I'll go Linux. :)

Snap (probably).

Smith, you don't mention what medium you'll be using the OS on - Desktop, Laptop/Netbook or tablet?

I tried Win 8 when they first released the Beta, tried very hard to like it over a one month period but to be honest loathed it, it was awful.

If you're going to use your Windows OS on a desktop and the BIOS of that machine allows any OS (not just Win 8) then I'd whole heartedly recommend Win 7 (assuming you can still buy a copy).

For a Laptop or tablet, if you like using a machine with a touchscreen then I'd warily recommend going with Win 8, bearing in mind MS have recently 'upgraded' it (that is, they've added a short cut to start the program to the task bar and called it a start button).

Incidentally, there has been no support for Win XP for some years now, merely security updates, and as long as your AV and anti-malware software is kept up to date and you don't browse nothing too iffy online, you can be pretty certain of not contracting a nasty.

My personal point of view is that with Win 7 MS got something right and Win 8 is an abomination.

But of course there are those who would disagree with me....

Good luck :)

I am using a laptop and would most likely continue to do so. Where is win 7 available, i.e. store, internet, etc.? What are the minimum requirements to run win 7, or 8?

Try Google !

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=windows+7+requirements

If you are looking for a change and a free one at that you could try ,

http://desktoplinuxreviews.com/debian-reviews/kwheezy-1-2/

http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=kanotix

Both the above can be run from a CD so that you can try before installing.
