I have somehow lost the left side panel in XP Home Control Panel.
This leaves me with clasic view - fine but would like to recover option of
changing back to Category View.
I think it must require a registry tweak, but where and how.

There is a GUI interface to change it.
start/run, type:
control folders
View tab, uncheck box for 'display simple folder view'

Another issue is 'explore mode' which can be entered by clicking the
"Folders" button, (if standard buttons are being displayed)

John,
On my XP Home Cont. Pnl. there is a row of icons across the top - Search,
Folders, View, etc., etc.. If I click the Folder icon, the left panel
changes to the view of the "directory tree". At the top of that listing is
the word Folder with an x in a box to the right. If I click on the x it
changes to the regular xp panel with the options for category, etc., etc..
Works here, maybe it will work for you.

In Control Panel, double click Folder Options.
On the General page, select "Show common tasks in folders".
Click OK.

Keep in mind that this will restore the common tasks pane in
all open folders, not just Control Panel.

Good luck
