I seem to remember I could change the way I viewed the icons in control
panel from the old style 'classic' to the new style of xp, but I don't seem
to have that option anymore can someone point me in the right direction to
solve this

Generally, there is an option in the upper left section of the window,
if you're in Classic view it should state 'Switch To Category View'
whilst if in XP style, the option reads 'Switch To Classic View'.

If you are not seeing it, chances are that your tasks are not visible in
the first place. If such is the case, select the 'Tools' menu and
select 'Folder Options...'. Then in the form that pops up, simply
select 'Show common tasks in folders'.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for your reply stefan, The 'Switch to.... ' option is not visible and
I tried your solution but the 'show common tasks in folders ' is already
checked. Is there anything else I can check that may help me

TIA

That is one strange thing to hear... could you send me a screen-shot of
your control panel window? Simply activate the control panel window,
keep the 'Ctrl' key pressed and press the 'Print Screen' (top right)
key, then Paste it in a reply to this email.
