Try reposting to microsoft.public.pocketpc.activesync for an answer from
someone more knowledgeable about syncing with non-default programs.
BTW, Windows Mobile 5 does NOT insist that Office be installed. It installs
Outlook for synchronization for your appointments, tasks, etc. If you did
not want this synchronization, I would have looked to Palm rather than
Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 5.
What did you expect to find when you looked through the product
documentation? I assume you did look through what it would require and what
was included on the Axim CD, no?

After furious head scratching, Laurie asked:
| I bought a Dell Axim X51v not knowing that Windows Mobile 5 would
| *demand* that Office be installed so that the synch function would
| work; this was conveniently not disclosed in the advertisements, or I
| would have gone elsewhere.
| I detest Outlook and use Outlook Express as my mail/news client
| and have mail/news accounts as User, but not as Admin.
| I was forced to install Outlook (as Admin), and then the Axim synch
| function still did not work, so I uninstalled it. Since then, I get
| a "OE is not your current mail client, would you like it to be"
| alerts on -every- boot. Also in IE, File|Send Link and Page are
| grayed out, so are now non-functional.
| I used Registry Mechanic several times after the Outlook uninstall,
| hoping it would find the key(s) that are doing this, but it did not.
| So, how do I reset OE to be my default mail/news reader and
| restore the IE File|Send Link and Page?
