Constanting losing DNS

Hi, i have two machines running and wired into a Draytek Vigor 2100vg, One
machine runs vista premium the other runs XP Home. The xp keeps its
connection all the time, the vista machine loses it's connection anywhere
between 5 minutes to five hours and using ipconfig/renew does not work i have
to keep restarting the vista machine yet the xp machine is running fine and
doesn't lose connection at all. Any advice please?

That Draytek may not be completely Vista-compatible. Suggestions:

1. Contact Draytek for a definitive answer, firmware update if
available, etc.

2. MS Internet Connectivity Evalution Tool -
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/using/tools/igd/default.mspx
This tool checks the router to see if it is compatible with Vista. I've
never used it so YMMV.

Contacted Dreytek and the router is compatable, and they remote accessed and
the set up is fine, they do not understand why the vista machine drops
connection whilst the xp doesn't, both wired in, nor do the 2 laptops drop
connection. Whats interesting is that when i get the message, cannot connect
to the dns server, the network settings are still showing an internet
connection and the packets are coming in thick and fast, resetting the
network connector does not work. i'm possibly thinking it's something to do
with my on board LAN. Is it possible to add a LAN card and use that instead
of the ethernet on board card?

dont know if it will work with you (as the scenario may differ), but i had a
tough time solving this:

-if you had activated internet connection sharing in vista and
-if you already dont have the 2nd net connection then
-you no longer have the tab "connection sharing" in the net adapter
properties

and the ics may interfere (it did for me) in your dns and internet
connection overall when you have only 1 connection, but then you cannot
deactivate it since there is no tab to show in the properties

the symptoms were internet losing connection suddenly, no ip or domain would
work in a browser, though any program already connected (e.g. a file
transfer) would not stop, ipconfig /renew, resetting, etcetera would not
work or only work for a little time
in my case the connection would work for a couple of days straight though
(my pc rarely is shut down)

3 routes:
-plug in for a moment a 2nd net connection then deactivate ics through the
primary connection properties
-deactivate ics in the services (you can try if your problem comes from here
just stopping it for a while)
-surely theres a command line to deactivate ics for a connection, but i dont
know which it is

not sure if it happens with xp also so it may be applicable also

Yeah that sounds like my problem, only it appears to have got worse over the
last couple of days, previously used to online for a few days then
disconnect, then after a few minutes i could reconnect, however last couple
of days losing connection after about 10-20 mins and a restart is needed to
obtain internet, which is a pain. Also like you say any open pages or
ftp/filesharing would keep connection. i have disable ics on this pc as it
doesn't really share it's connection as the other machine is wired in to the
router and obtained it's own address. will see how it goes,

Before you add another network adapter (NIC), try setting the power
management of the NIC to off. Go to the System applet in Control Panel
and get into Device Manager. Exactly how you do this will depend on
whether you're using the Vista or Classic interface. You can also click
on the Start Orb and type in the Search box: devmgmt.msc. Since you're
going to make a change, when devmgmt appears above right-click on it and
choose "run as Administrator". (I'm sorry not to be more precise about
how to get to Device Manager but my Vista machine is inaccessible right
now.)

Once you are in Device Manager, find the entry for your NIC and
double-click it to get its Properties. There should be a Power
Management tab. Click on it and uncheck the box next to "allow Windows
to turn off this device when not in use". If that doesn't work, there is
no problem in purchasing a PCI NIC and installing it instead; they are
very inexpensive. Just make sure to buy one that is Vista-compatible and
turn off the power management on that one, too.

Just thought i'd thank you guys for your help, problem now sorted, it
appeared to be the ics, no drops at all since changing that setting.

Cheers.
