Constant Freezes

I did a clean install of Vista Ultimate on a new HD in a freshly built
machine. I configured it for a dual boot, thank goodness. XP runs fine.
Whenever I boot into Vista, the machine will freeze sometime within the
first couple of minutes. No mouse, even the clock stops. Vista runs fine
in a virtual machine, or in safe mode with networking. It does not, however
run under the diagnostic startup of msconfig.

The hangs occur anytime after the OS starts to load (POST is OK.)

The install was far from trouble-free. It took about ten tries to get past
the last screen in the setup. I left one hanging for 48 hours, just to be
sure I wasn't being impatient. Perhaps it is the same issue.

I would greatly appreciate any insight that would help me narrow down this
issue. If I didn't have to teach this, I would have given up a long time
ago. This is worse than Windows386.

It may be just too much machine for this OS.

Realtek RTL816/811 Gigabit Ethernet NIC
2 500 gig e-SATA WD drives (one for each OS)

After I made my post, I realized that this must sound like a broken record.

I came to the group because I have a problem, and I came using the very lame
Windows Live Mail, which does not retrieve many headers. So, if it has been
answered (I would add that the drivers are up-to-date (using Driver
Detective, not MSFT), point me to a post and I will use a "real" newsreader
to look at the reply. Better yet, this e-mail is quite valid.
