Connection to the internet

Last week I shut off my computer at night and in the morning was not able to
connect to the internet. Internet explorer would open but no page could be
displayed. I called my internet service provider and went through all the
steps they could think of to get my internet to work i.e. resetting the modem
etc... He then took me through various steps of pinging different websites
through dos. This established that my connection was actually fine. Has
anyone experience a problem like this? Do I have some sort of virus? Any
information is appreciated. Thanks.

Check to see if Work Offline is checked in IE.
Open IE and at the top, select File and toward the bottom of the list is
Work Offline. I have been seeing this problem with one user lately.

It would be nice to hear back from the OP.
In my case, it was spyware which caused Work Offline to be checked in IE.
The user would uncheck it but everytime he logged on, it would be checked
again. AdAware took care of it.
