connection showing activity when no browsers are on?

came in this morning and had never noticed it before, but I have a westell
versalink modem. I have verizon dsl
The computer was in hibernation, and I noticed my E1 light was flashing from
time to time.
Only thing that was more or less running in the back ground was Norton's
anitivirus. I have big fix too. No browser or anything else running (msn,
yahoo)
Never noticed the activity light flashing periodically before?
C/A/D networking shows 0 net use, performance shows cpu usisage about 1%,
Physical memory, available the last 3, change alittle? would there be
activity I am unaware of going on? or is it common for the activity light on
the modem to flash from time to time?
Thanks
Bruce

Bruce,

Besides activity from other computers broadcasting, which will hit your modem
incoming, NAV and other programs will periodically check with their home server
to see if any updates are available.

If you want to make sure that there's nothing unknown on your computer (not a
bad idea either), get TCPView (free) which will provide a GUI view of what
network traffic your computer is producing.

I have an ancient Westell Wirespeed B90-36R516 Rev.G ADSL modem, shipped in
bridge mode. What is eerie is to watch the activity light blinking,
briefly, while no LAN devices, except the Netgear FR114P, are on. As long
as you have an IP address, any packets shoved at that address will result
in modem activity.
