Connection problem

Hello,
Im curently running winxp professional sp2, ie6 on a 512 adsl (alcatel
speedtouch). Ive been experiencing periods of time where my connection goes
inactive, mostly in games (Age of Empires3) that have gone on for some time.
Occasionally the connection goes inactive on the internet, in the sense pages
cant load and the connection icon displays a blank (no data being
trnasferred). It could be a modem problem but since Im not sure I thought I'd
start by asking arnd here first- how do you diagnose what exactly is the
problem?

These Alcatel modems are notorious for drawing too much current from the USB
port, causing the self-resetting fuse to trip. That might not be the reason,
it might also be a bad line, but it very often is.

Routers are generally more reliable and more secure, also they are
relatively cheap now. Might be worth considering one.

What happens if the self-resetting fuse trips? And what causes a bad line as
well as what fixes it?
