Connection lost after standby or inactivity?

New Voyager 210 ADSL router connected via onboard ethernet, Gigabyte m/b.
Works OK except for when PC is put in Standby or connection has been
inactive for a while then connection appears to be lost although all the
LED's on modem indicating it's working OK. Rebooting PC it then works OK
again.
My ISP is Madasafish and their telephone support told me that since the
internet and other LED's are lit steady then the problem's in my PC.
Have done the troubleshooting on the modem configuration page and it reports
all OK, but there is a lot there under advanced configuration which I don't
understand.
Tried resetting router, again no difference.
Someone told me to try using a static rather than dynamic IP address, have
done that but no difference.
Have updated m/b chipset drivers, including LAN drivers.
Recently changed ISP's, had previously been using a Speedtouch USB modem
with no problems at all with old ISP.
Voyager also has USB connection, would it help if I use that instead,
installation notes recommend using ethernet but didn't say why?
Using XP Pro with SP2.
If this is the wrong group for this type of question please point me to a
more appropriate one.
Any help appreciated.

Not sure if it's relevant but I don't have the usual connection icon in my
System Tray, it sometimes appears briefly.
Also have found a workaround of sorts which avoids rebooting. Made a
shortcut to the configuration page on Desktop, when the problem arises I
open that, disconnect from there then reconnect.
Irritating having to do this and would still like to know what's causing it.
Seems like something somewhere is disconnecting after a period of
inactivity.

Can you check in DeviceManager (Start->Run: devmgmt.msc ) under
NICs->RClick->properties->PowerManagement-tab?
If there's a check on "Allow Windows to shut down...." , UNcheck it...

Thanks for the reply.
Spoke too soon about the workaround, it appeared to work only for a while.
Under Network Adapters/Gigabit Ethernet Controller/Properties/Power
Management in Device Manager there IS that "Allow Windows to shut down this
device to save power" box and it IS ticked, is that what's doing it?
Am currently using USB connection but will try that and if that's what it is
many thanks.
