When the network wizard in invoked on the xp system you get choice of
different kinds of connections. Which type of connection shud i select if
both pc's are connected via the linksys router to a cable modem. I want to
share the printers on the xp box , and i want the xp box to be able to
access files on the win98 pc. Printer and file sharing are enabled on the
win98 system.

M$'s NetWiz calls that a Residential Gateway.

I've got the xp system to see the win98 system. On the win98 system i can see
the xp network in nework neighborhood but I can't see any of the xp printers
that I have specified as shared? I've got netbui installed on both systems,
although on the xp system I didn't install it directly from the xp disc. I've
disabled the firewall on the xp system (temporarily) and I still can't see
the shared printer from the win98 system? Assuming that at some point i can
see the xp printers on the win98 system is there anything I have to do to the
firewall to let the win98 system access the printers?

Found the answer, evidently on the winxp system there is a firewall installed
and even though one of the setting was to allow for shared files and printers
you still have to go in and sepecifically identify the ip address of the
compters you want the firewall to let thru...
