Connecting two PC's with Crossover Cable

I no virtually nothing about networking. Could somebody point me to a site
(e.g a good FAQ) which tells me how to connect two Pc's (one running XP the
other running WinME) via a temporary network crossover cable (Cat 5e).

I have searched extensively without luck but really need simple instructions
as to what to do.
