Connecting over the Internet with RDC

If I want to connect to a remote computer over the Internet, behind a router, what shall I
use ?
Computer name only ? ISP-provided IP address ? Internal LAN IP address (192.168.0...... )
?
Thanks in advance.

Public IP address of the router and forward the port (3389) to the proper
internal IP address via your router settings.

As my brother, owner of the remote computer, is not too computer-savvy, wouldn't it be
better and easier to use Remote Assistance, instead of RDC ?
This way, no tweaks to the remote router would be necessary. Am I right ?
Thanks.

Still need to tweak things a bit - as you are not actually remoting directly
to your brother's machine - but to the router and then to your brother's
machine.

(And if this is not for you to help your brother - remote assistance is not
good unless someone is there to accept the connection.)

TeamViewer would be best in your case for remote help/etc. Free for
personal use.

UltraVNC Single Click is something you could setup as well...

Once you have control of your brother's machine remotely - you could
configure his router for remote management and/or for the proper port
forwarding, etc. Even assign it a Dynamic DNS and make sure the settings
for Remote Desktop are correct on his PC so that he could remote to it by a
domain name instead of a number...
