Connecting Laptop to Desktop

Hi ,
I am new to computer networking. I want to connect my PC to laptop. I
have few very basic questions:
1. both my PC and laptop has a dial-up modem. Can I connect them
through a telephone wire? If yes how?
2. I have heard that I can connect the two PC's by cross connected
ethernet cable. Please tell me the procedure.

PS: both the PC's are running on windows XP profeessional.

You have to network the computers independent from the DialUp.

The easiest and most efficent way to connect the two together would be to
purchase a small hub (4 port should work) this allows you to share files and
your internet connection.
