Connecting a projector to a laptop

Hi

We have a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 5100) with XP on it.
We have a projector Sanyo PRO-X. When we want to connect
the laptop to the projector, it doesn't work.
We have a workaround which is to connect a "normal" 15'
external screen, switch the display to the external
screen, and then, unplug this screen and connect the
projector... it is working fine but is not really handy
when you want to demo something going around with your
laptop and the tiny projector...
We feel there is something with a refresh frequency or
something like that??

Thanks for your help.

Gee, I'd bet that Dell has tech support for just this kind
of question.
