Connecting 2 Computers!?!

G

Guest

Hello... and thanks in advance for any insight into this issue!

I am trying to connect my laptop (running Win2000pro) to my desktop pc
(WinXPsp2) via a direct LAN connection using a cat5e ethernet cable. All I
want to be able to do is transfer files... I don't need to share devices or
connect to the internet. Both computers have funcional NIC cards. Both
computers have unique names, but are set to the same workgroup. I have set
the ip addresses to 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 and both submasks to
255.255.255.0

When I run the network diagnostic on the xp pc the only thing that comes
back as (FAILED) is the network adapter [00524291] WAN Miniport (IP)
(FAILED), DNSServerSearchOrder... What does this mean?

I really have no idea what I'm doing, and have just gotten this far from the
internet.... PLEASE HELP!?

I have obviously missed a step somehwere... The two computers aren't
communicating... neither is recognizing the other.

Thanks so much,
Ange

The cable is probably straight. You'll need a crossover for direct
connection. Also turn off the XP firewall.

Thank you... you're RIGHT! I had a straight cat5e... now I have the two
computers hooked up with the crossover cat5e (I can't believe I spent a whole
day trying to troubleshoot with the WRONG CABLE!?!).

so the two computers show up on network places... but both say i don't have
permission to access the other. i think i have it set up to not NEED
passwords, but am not sure about the advanced settings. So sorry to be such
a greener pain about this... any ideas?

You'll want to create an account (in User Accounts) on the WinXP machines
with the username and password that you use to logon to the Windows 2000
machine with. Likewise you'll need to create an account (in Users and
Passwords) on the 2000 machine with the username and password that you use
to logon to the XP machines with. Then you'll need to share out the
resource(s) with permissions for those users. Also make sure they're all
part of the same workgroup. Then you'll no longer be prompted for the IPC$
password (Inter-process communication)

In a peer level workgroup, when you try to access resources on a Windows
NT/2000/XP/2003 machine, Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 needs to authenticate the
user. If the user account doesn't exist in it's local account database, then
access will be denied.

Thanks again. Actually I have already done each of those suggestions... I
still cannot access the desktop(XP) machine from the laptop (win2000pro). I
get an error: (My XP comp name) is not accessible. Logon failure: the user
has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. It seems
like it must be a permissions issue... but I have opened XP right up to allow
everything and everyone on the network to connect to it (supposedly).

I think I am going to be handing over remote control of the machine to a
Tech Support person tomorrow.

Thanks again,
Ange

What logon type? Check Event Viewer for error details. When you view the
logged events in Event Viewer (double-click them in the right-hand pane) in
the upper right corner, third button down is a copy to clipboard, then you
can paste in the body of a reply message.

Please do so for each of the different System Log events (that are a Type:
'Error' or 'Warning') since last boot so we can see all of the event detail.

Hi...
The accounts on each computer are administrators, with the same username and
same password.

From the EventViewer, there is only one warning in the "system" events: (I
think maybe because I unstalled a protocol?)

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: SNMP
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1101
Date: 23/03/2006
Time: 2:17:34 PM
User: N/A
Computer: OWNER-FULKL1OH2
Description:
The SNMP Service is ignoring extension agent key
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IPXMibAgent\CurrentVersion because it is missing or
misconfigured.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 02 00 00 00 ....

Under the "security" event logs, there is something interesting...?:

Event Type: Failure Audit
Event Source: Security
Event Category: Logon/Logoff
Event ID: 534
Date: 23/03/2006
Time: 2:24:46 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: OWNER-FULKL1OH2
Description:
Logon Failure:
Reason: The user has not been granted the requested
logon type at this machine
User Name: Share
Domain: LAPTOP
Logon Type: 3
Logon Process: NtLmSsp
Authentication Package: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
Workstation Name: LAPTOP

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

..... I don't know what the business about a domain is? I didn't set up a
'domain' for the LAN connection.

Thanks for your input!

Logon Type 3 is a network logon. On Windows XP;

Control Panel|Admin Tools|Local Security Policy\Security Settings\Local
Policies\User Rights Assignments

and add the user or group to;

"Access this computer from the network"

check the cable first whether it is a cross cable or straight cable .it
should be a cross cable. then try by disabling the fire wall on xp and redo
the network setup wizard.

Thanks.
I didn't have access to the User Rights Assignments... I have XP home edition.
Anyway, I got some remote help, and I think this is basically what he
did... Thanks again for your help.
