Connected but no access to network

D

Dimitri Moursellas

Weird problem: I can connect to my dial up ISP and yet have no access to any
web pages and all Ping tests fail.

The main symptom of the problem is that in the connection process the step
called "Registering your computer on the network" takes much longer than
usual - it takes minutes rather than the usual seconds. Then, even though
the connection appears to have been established, I cannot access any web
page and all Ping tests fail.

Below is a modem log that, I think, has some strange comments but I really
don't understand them. Perhaps someone out there can shed some light on this
problem and suggest how to correct it.

Thanks.

Can you provide us with RAS logs.

You can enable tracing by running the following command: "netsh ras set
tracing * enabled"
After enabling, try to reproduce the problem you are facing.
Disable the tracing using: "netsh ras set tracing * disabled"
Now the logs would be available at %windir%\tracing
Zip the logs and send it to us.

Thanks,
Dinesh.

It looks like the Tracing did not help much...??!!

Here is some additional info:

- the same ISP account on a different computer works just fine.
- on the original computer (the sick one...), using a different account and
a different ISP exhibits the same problem: very long time on the
"Registering your computer" step; very long time to disconnect; no access to
any web page; Ping tests fail

Any ideas from anybody??

Hi,

We analyzed the logs u had sent. Apart from some unexpected delay in a few
functions we didn't find anything that is actually screwed up or not
working. The extra time taken
for "Registering" step is maybe due to some problem in getting a valid IP
address or other options from your ISP. That may be the reason why your ping
tests are also failing.

You said the same scenario works fine with another machine.

So can u just send us the output of " ipconfig /all " command for both the
machines (after u think the connection is established with the ISP)

Also it would be fine if you can send a snapshot of the registry keys
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DNSRegisteredAdapters\<the
specific adapter>

(You can do this the following way,

cmd> regedit

Just open the registry key

Press PrintScreen

Paste into a new Word Doc and send it)
