Connect window keeps popping up, but I have DSL!

I'm an XP Home Edition user.

This started happening last week after I updated XP online, with
the latest stuff from Microsoft.

I use DSL and connect windows aren't supposed to pop up, but they
started after that. I asked someone about it and they said to go
into MSIE and the connections settings and set all the connections
to NEVER DIAL. I did, but the window popped up again ( it always
happens when accessing slow-loading web pages ). I went in and the
setting had changed again to allow it to dial!

So I keep setting it to "never dial" and it keeps getting set back
to dial anyway!

I use Zone Alarm firewall and Norton Antivirus which is always
updated, so it shouldn't be a virus etc, right?

What the heck is causing this though?!

It's making me crazier!

If I were you, I would uninstall the NORTON GARBAGE and DOWNLOAD AVG
ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION! There were some days, NORTON was my hero of saving me
from viruses. One day someone told me to try AVG ANTIVIRUS FROM
http://www.grisoft.com I tried downloading that and found out bunch of TROJEN
viruses and NORTON did not even picking up! Since then, I do not trust
NORTON! It hard to balme to a ANTI VIRUS PRODUCT because, those companies
needs to find viruses in order to create an antivirus! However, if you are
slow, then you are too late! It is always to be fast is the first! AVG
searches viruses fast and update their antivirus data base every day! If I
were you, I would also download spybot and see if spyware doing that!
Sometimes, it is spyware that makes you cannot go on-line rather than
viruses. SPYBOT is a free good program that you should use! Do not set to let
it start when the windows starts and do not enable its resident protection.
If you enable that, every freaking time when you install a program, you get a
dialoug box where you do not know what to click to enable to install the
program. So just search for the updates, download them and check scanning!
You may have to close the program and restart by double clicking to search
for the spyware because for the first time, after you search, downloaded and
installed the updates, it may not scan the computer until you close the
program and restart by double clicking the program.

Also final setup I would try is to click START>>> CONTROL PANNEL >>
CONNECTION AND SETTINGS >>> NETWORK CONNECTION (CLICK SWITCH TO CLASSIC ON
THE LEFT IF YOU SEE CATEGORY VIEW) >> Then after you are in NETWORK
CONNECTIONS>> Left hand side click Create a new connection >> click next >>>
click the radio button connec to the internet >> click the radio button says
setup my conneciton manually >> then click connect using a broadband
connection that is always on >> click next and click finish.

As a final step, that is I would try if I were you. If that does not work I
will put the windows xp cd, click exit when that windows xp installation
wizard appears. Then I would restart, boot from windows xp cd, Then I will do
a windows REPAIR by PRESS R after press F8 for the agreement.

Remember, not the first repair, the second repair will save all the windows
programs and everything, then it will reinstall system files and leave the
programs and anything you have in the hard drive safe! If you get an error
during the repair, I would restart the process again. You are not most likely
to happen such thing, but just in case! Do not do unless you know what you
are doing!

The thing I would try is set your connection to always dial and in the
connect box click to connect automatically. If that doesn't work, there are
two types of dsl connection. One is dial up which uses the normal dial up
window the other is always on which is always connected to the net. You need
to know which you have. Contact your isp or have a look on their web page to
find out exactly how they want you to connect. Depending on which you have
you can then look at how to sort the problem.

Mama Bear,

You must have a dialup adapter in the 'Network Adapter' section of your
Device Manager. Right-click 'My Computer' > select Properties > 'Hardware'
tab > Device Manager. expand (+) 'Network Adapters', right-click the
Dialup's adapter (not the DSL adapter) and select 'Uninstall'. If it
reinstalls after rebooting, repeat the steps but just 'Disable' instead of
'Uninstall'.

She tried all those already. Ewido has a free trial and a free online
scanner but that is still in beta.

Ok, I'm trying out their free web scan and in the middle of it now.
It's reporting the usual tracking cookie junk, real or not, who
knows?

And then it claims to have found a java trojan called
counter.jpg-301c72d2-2517da79.zip
but who knows if it really found something or what?

I did a google and found no reference to it, nor at NAV's virus
threats site.

Okay, ewido is a good spyware scan too. I can tell you one more thing but
before even doing this, try scanning your computer for viruses and spyware or
adaware, all that junk.

GO to network connections >> click advanced in the top menue, do you know
where file, edit, view located; that menue has a tab called ADVANCED, click
on it>>>Then uncheck everything in AUTODIAL >> then click the CALL BACK TABADVANCED menue, where you got file, edit , view, click on that Advanced >>>
click Advanced settings and if you are using DSL, make sure you have LOCAL
AREA CONNECTION first then remote connections or whatever next. If you see
LOCAL AREA CONNECTION in the second, select it and move it up by clicking the
right hand side arrow to move it up! DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO BINDINGS just the
connections.

Let know whether all those things work, if nothing works, you need to do a
windows xp home repair where it save all the things and reinstall windows xp
home!

MAMA BEAR,

Get ride of NORTON garbage. If you have norton 2003, not really really
bad, if you have norton 2005, it is way too bad.

1. Norton uses too much resources
2. Does not detect trojens.
3. Blocks almost everything too much protection in other words, cannot even
ping and identify your computer is alive in the network!

If you have Norton, you will see. It can be your Norton that trying to go
on-line and your dial up connection pop up, but things I told you to do would
prevent the connection pop up box but still I would download AVG and use
windows firewall. There is another good program called AVAST gives you more
protection very simply.
