connect using USB-cable?

is it possible to connect 2 computers through a usb-cable? I need to

Thanks, but the cable i have is a regular usb-cable connected between the
two computers. Can i do something with that?

Hi, Richard -

USB controllers provide 5v power as well as a data path -
connecting two PCs by their power supplies probably isn't
the wisest thing to do. Using a straight USB cable to
connect two computers will likely damage both machines.

What you're trying to do isn't possible with a standard
USB cable - what you'll need to use is a couple of USB to
Ethernet adapters and connect the machines with a
crossover cable.

Also, a company called Parallel Technologies makes a
cable that can be used to connect two PCs by their USB
ports - but by the time you get finished buying the cable
it might be less expensive to just buy an Ethernet
crossover cable and connect the machines' network cards.

the problem is that only one of the computer has a network card (my laptop).
What other (cheap) options do i have?

Here an inexpensive network card is usually cheaper
expensive than a good USB cable. Hopefully you'll find
something that doesn't cost a whole lot where you are.
All you need is a network card for the desktop PC and a
crossover cable and you're all set - in the US something
like that would cost less than $30 but I don't know what
it would cost where you are.
