Confused about email bouncing and not receiving

K

Kimberly

I have several email address' that I forward to my main personal email in
Windows Mail. I have not been receiving many of my emails (hit and miss) and
here is the error message they receive: One of the recipients was rejected
by the server; The rejected email address was '(my email here)' Server:
'smtp.west.cox.net' Protocol: SMPT, Server Response: '550 5.1.1 <(my email
here)> relaying not allowed', Port: 25, Secure (SSL) No, Server Error: 550,
Error Number: 0x800CCC79.

When I send test emails or work with the server that I forward from, they
all get to me just fine! But I have several teachers that email me from a
high school, and theirs are all bumped. Can anyone help?

SMPT is not a valid protocol; try changing it to SMTP.

Do the connections with problems cross over from one internet provider's
equipment to another's before they reach the server? If so, such
connections
to port 25 are often blocked to cause trouble for spammers, often with an
error message about relaying, and whoever is sending the mail needs to ask
their email provider if their outgoing mail server accepts outgoing mail
through any port other than port 25, and if so, where to find their
instructions
for switching over to the other port. Just trying all the ports is a very
slow
way to find out; there are about 65,000 ports available, and it's unlikely
that
more than a few of them accept outgoing mail.

See if this helps you find such information for some of them:

You didn't say what email provider the others are using, so it's hard for
us to help you find their instructions.

Thank you. I miss typed the SMTP, it is correct on my end.

All of their emails are coming from @smusd.org (a school district in
california). I don't know who their server is.

I will look in to what you wrote and see if I can get somewhere! I really
appreciate you taking the time to write back.

So this error is experienced by others who try to send mail to you?

Typically this happens when the sender is using an Internet connection
that is from a different company than the one who owns the SMTP server
(Cox). For the reason why, see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

If you need a workaround, let me know if the senders are using laptops
that often travel to different locations.

Yes, this error is experienced by others who try to send to me. I was
completely unaware that I wasn't receiving all of my email until my phone
began ringing from those who hadn't heard back from me.

I receive no notification that anything is wrong or has been bumped, making
me look very flaky! They're spam filter, I'm assuming, is receiving the
bounce notification as the senders too, are unaware that I am not receiving
their message. The error message I posted below was from one who did a
little investigating and discovered I wasn't getting any of my email from the
school district.

There is really nothing you can do at your end. Assuming that the
one error message you included is representative, the problem is
at the sender's end.

You're welcome.
