Conflict Zonealarm vs. Mailwasher

P

Paul

Maybe a bit offtopic but I run Zonealarm and Mailwasher to safeguard against
spam that might contain viruses, hence the connection with this newsgroup. I
suppose a lot of you do too.

Mailwasher (2.0) sometimes sends out bounce messages so fast that Zonealarm
(the free version, 5.0.590.043) thinks it's a spam sender, as it objects to
Mailwasher sending out more than 5 emails per second. I've tried in vain to
alter any Zonealarm settings to stop it blocking Mailwasher emails. I just
can't find the page to change or disable this! In the page "Email
Protection" I only see "Basic Mailsafe Settings".

Apparently this setting can only be changed in paid versions of Zonealarm. I
did testdrive the Pro version some time ago but only recently the problem
started. Sometimes the only remedy is to disable Zonealarm altogether but
this can't be the optimum way I should hope. I did a clean install of the
latest version of Zonealarm, losing all my settings, but that didn't help
any.

Any bright ideas?

I use MW and I don't use the bounce feature. It's worthless and all
you're doing is choking the POP3 servers by bouncing things back. :)

No, actually, by using the MW bounce features, you are
sending the so-called bounces to complain to innocent
parties. MW does not contain the smarts to accurately
determine the actual source of a spam, regardless of what
the folk at MW say: they are lying to you in that one
single instance and so far refuse to fix their advertising.
Never use the bounce feature:
1. It can NOT send a bounce that looks like an actual
bounce - they are obvious forgeries.
2. Mailwasher does NOT figure out the actual vs. forged
email headers, and as a result 99% of the time, sends the
bounces to an innocent party. Innocent parties may either
lose their own accounts for spamming (and it might
eventualloy end up being you), or may report you for
spamming. Fortunatelyl, most ISPs these days know about
this problem and don't punish their clients for ignorance -
but - not all ISPs are that savvy.

Check it out; I'm not being fanatical - and to make it
worse, MW knows about its misleading advertising and does
nothing about it software OR advertising wise. They won't
even default the bounce feature to OFF.

Other than that, MW is an effective tool to sort/file spam
and works well. Please turn off the bounce feature.

Wow, that's an eyeopener. So I'd change my problem to stop sending bounces.

That WOULD help.

Agree, I'd hate to sift through 50-100 spam mails per day in any other way.

HOW??? I'd like that, but short of unmarking all emails individually I don't
see how I could accomplish that...
Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, I don't use MW anymore (moved on to a
more techie product) and don't remember where to turn
it off. It is definitely an option though, as I too
used the bounces at one time - I remember being pretty
embarassed when I finally figured what the real
situation was.

I imagine if you ask the MW folk, they'll be happy to
help you; this issue is a thorn in their side and kind
words might get you a quick answer - don't berate them
and be polite. Or, maybe someone here will help out -
there are lots of MW users here.

Paul, if you are running Version 4.1 of Mailwasher Pro, just select the Spam
Tools button on the top toolbar, then choose the "Origin of Spam" button on
the left side. It's here that you can shut off the bounce feature for your
unwanted e-mails. I too strongly suggest that you don't use the bounce
feature.

To turn off the bounce function in Mailwasher 4.1, go Tools | Accounts |
Properties | <click on the third tab> | <take the check off Enable bouncing
of messages>

Thanks Ma No. This works with version 2.0.40 also.
