Configuration & Deployment issues

Dear NG,

I have been asked to look into tools and best practices for configuring sets
of PCs. Is this the best NG to ask questions about the rapid deployment of
standard Microsoft operating systems and custom applications? Our problem
is two fold. We will be shipping servers and client machines in lots of 50
to 100 units. These are brand new machines that will have to be checked out
as to hardware and BIOS specifications. The results of that checkout needs
to logged in a SQL Server database. Then the OS needs to be loaded. At the
moment this is Windows Server 2000 and Windows XP. Much of the data that
System Information tells the user will have to be entered into the SQL
database. That is version numbers, device drivers, etc. Finally, the
application software needs to be loaded and the SQL database entries need to
be made. This is what happens with new systems.

The second part of our problem is the up dating of systems in the field. We
would like to either "push" or "pull" upgrades to installations around the
world. Key to this deployment will be the verification that the site can
even take the new upgrades. We can use our SQL database to see if the site
is really a candidate. If it is we would like to deploy the upgrade and
adjust our database accordingly.

I have been poking around various sites at Microsoft and have read a fair
amount about this problem. I would like to find a good overview site. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Bob
