Conditional Format

How can I edit the conditional format so null (when the cell contains
nothing) values have no shading in my spreadsheet?
For example, I selected column E and applied conditional formating in order
to highlight all faculty hired before 1985, however, I have null values and
the conditional format appears.

Select Cell E1, then click on the Column Header of Column E
Format, Conditional Formatting, Select FormulaIS (from drow-down)
in the box paste in:
=AND(E1>0,E1<1985)
Select pattern desired..
OK, (out)
