Computers won't talk to each other on a network

Jay

I have 2 PCs connected to the internet using a 3com officeconnect4 hub. Both
PCs connect to the internet ok but I can't get file sharing to work between
them (either with the machine name or with the explicit IP address). I'm
able to ping each PC from the other using the IP address from ipconfig. The
IP addresses are both real addresses (62.78.x.x). Both PCs are in the same
workgroup and if I connect a crossover cable between them then I can get
file sharing to work ok. I've got all firewalls turned off.

Any ideas? I'm pretty new to networking so it's probably something stupid.
Is this hub actually the right thing to use for a network?

Thanks!

Jay.

Hello Jay,

Please tell us about the Operating System, and the HUB / Switch
Config.

Is both the machine have (62.78.x.y) (62.78.x.z) , then what is the
netmask of the machines.

Regards,

Prachait Saxena

The OS is XP. One machine is SP2, the other is SP1. The problem was the same
before I upgraded to SP2 and I've turned off the XP firewall on both.

The subset mask is 255.255.248.0 on both machines

How do I find the config for the hub?

I've just noticed the node type was peer to peer on one of the machines so
I've changed it to Hybrid (like the other machine). Don't know if this
affects anything (it's for name resolution isn't it? It doesn't work even
with explicit IP addresses)

Thanks,

Jay.

Post here the contents of *ipconfig /all* of both machines. Also specify
what do you mean by /can't get file sharing to work/. Post the exact
error message you got and other symptoms.

If you are using hub for commercial purposes, then a hub wont suit your
needs.
A switch will be a good choice.
