Computers not seeing each other on XP Pro network

Zayde

I have had a Dell desktop running XP Pro with a cable modem, and
Sygate Personal Firewall. .
I just got a Dell notebook running XP Home, and a Netgear router.

The Desktop connects to the modem by cable, and the notebook by
wireless.
Each computer works fine, but they do not see each other. The
computers do not appear on the other computer's Network Places. I
want to be able to share files.

Do I have to uninstall the Sygate Firewall on the desktop ? Just
'Exiting Firewall' does not help.

Are they in the same subnet? posting the results of both computers ipconfig
/all may help.

ipconfig results:
Desktop:
ip address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Notebook:
ip address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Thanks.

A misbehaving personal firewall is, by far, the #1 problem with server
visibility here. If Sygate Firewall is part of the computer in question, then
un installing it is the best way to verify the problem. Or, given enough
support by Sygate, you might be able to figure out how to make it work properly.

You could diagnose the problem, using COMPLETE logs from "browstat status",
"ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each
computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):
