Computer Won't Start

My Windows XP Pro computer has a problem. When I start it, it goes into the
advanced start-up methods page, and lets me choose any method [Safe Mode,
etc.]. No matter what is selected, it gets to the boot screen, the monitor
flickers off, and back to the advanced start-up methods page. This goes on
forever [until I turn off the power source]. Any help? Thanks,

Is there anyway I can recover my files without buying a new hard drive?

Anything I can boot from?

Not really. Any solution that might help access the drive is going to cost
something.
Your registry is probably trashed. Without access to the system, the only
answer is as you say, to boot to another drive, or system, and 'take
ownership' of the files.
The way prices are, buying a second machine might be the cheapest way :/ You
didn't make any backup provisions, so you're stuck with buying/borrowing
something.

Did you try the following repair:

1. Boot from XP CD
2. Bypass first repair option - recovery console.
3. Setup will state it has found a XP installation
4. It will ask if you want to repair the installation.
5. Select the XP installtion listed and selct repair.
6. Setup will continue
7. Will take time because it is actually an upgrade installation and
preserves all "stuff" on the drive.

Not : if setup does not indicate it has found a XP installation (Step #3) -
thst is not good!!!

Adrian:
Did you try the Repair install of the XP OS as Mark had previously
suggested?

Sure, just attach the drive to another XP system and copy the files off.
Best plan is to make an image of the drive, using the free trial version of
Acronis True Image.

Keep in mind, though, that new drives aren't expensive. I see new 80-gig
drives for under CDN$50.

Did you try the "last known good config" option in the boot menu you
mention?

What can I do if none of the options in the F8 "Windows Advanced Options"
work-ie. when I select "Safe Mode" or "Last known good configuration" or any
of the others it goes to the select operating system screen-I select the only
option-Windows XP Home-and nothing happens??

I tried everything, that included. It just got to the boot screen, the
monitor turned off, and it was as if the computer restarted.

I should try to boot again, holding down the DEL or F2, whichever is the one to
get into Bios. See if your disk(s) are shown and have a look at Boot to see what
is the chosen boot sequence, then report back.
