I had a similar problem with a new SATA HDD. The problem turned out to be
the FSB, which I had set to 230. This affects the PCI and IDE clocks too and
it couldn't cope. I put FSB back to 200 and it works slow (but only 2ghz
rather than 2ghz)

Hi Craig. Had a similar problem when I installed one XP. Did you stay with
the install or just let it get on with it ?. Was wondering if it came up
with any error msgs. Probably the quickest solution is to do a fresh
install, and check whether XP can`t find a device driver on its way in. Mine
was the modem driver, but I missed that. best wishes..j

The fsb is set as default i assume, no soft bios settings to change to
the best of my knowledge. I will take a look though, any other
suggestions? I believe you may be on to something as different drives
respond differently.

Thanks

Did you tried to change the components, particularly the power supply.

yes it is not a power or RAM issue, i would say the cpu or mainboard
were bad if the installation didnt go as smooth as it possibly could,
and then the restarts happen when booting the OS

The OS will boot on occasion* but once it hits the GUI there is a
restart and this is very occasionally. Other than that it restarts
prior to being able to enter safe mode right after the second BIOS info
screen is displayed (attatched devices etc...)

I have done many fresh installs without one error message and this
continuosly happens, this computer is for a client so I am in a rather
big rush here

Thanks all

Can someone please offer me suggestions though, I really am at a loss

I need to know why my comp reboots right after the second BIOS screen,
when disk drives and other info are displayed. On occasion it will boot
but then restart into the GUI. The strange thing is the installation of
WinXP pro went seamlessly no problem at all so I assume hardware is not
the issue but then after the boot it restarts and goes back to the BIOS
then restarts and of course :( back to the BIOS.

Probably won't help, but I just had a problem with an XP install not liking
a monitor and displaying a blank screen. The answer was to hit F8 as soon
as the BIOS went through so as to open the menu where you can opt for 'Safe
Mode' etc. I selected 'Enable VGA Mode' and the problem was solved.

You might check your bios settings for the drives, and
especially their cabling. Check the usual things like
power, and perhaps try clearing CMOS and removing all but
the boot OS drive... adding back the others in turn.

Sounds like a driver problem to me, the mother board may not like one
of the generic drivers XP is loading. At least that was the problem
the last time I had a similar situation after installing XP. The
problem was with the drivers for the IDE, it was good enough to
install but not to run. Eventually, I got into safemode and installed
the latest drivers supplied by the chipset manufacturer which solved
the problem but I have no idea of what exactly was wrong.

Good luck.

We have an insufficient description of the events but so far
there is no evidence that it's booting far enough for ANY
drivers to be loading at all. The windows splash boot logo
will appear before any device-specific drivers, unless it
was disabled.

Could be drivers, but based upon the brief description, it
just didn't seem like it was booting that far yet.
